Authorities in Ekiti State have launched an investigation into a tragic domestic incident in Ise-Ekiti, in the Ise/Orun Local Government Area, after a middle-aged man died in circumstances involving an alleged attempt to harm his teenage daughter.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026, and has left residents of the community in shock. The man, identified by neighbours simply as Segun, was found dead behind his residence, while his daughter was discovered with serious injuries and rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical care.
According to residents, the incident unfolded in the early morning when unusual noises were heard coming from the family’s home. Concerned neighbours reportedly gathered after the disturbance escalated, prompting some residents to investigate the situation. It was at that point that the injured child was found and immediate efforts were made to save her life.
A resident of Ise-Ekiti, Mr Patrick Abayomi, said the community was deeply unsettled by the development. He explained that neighbours quickly mobilised to assist the injured girl, who is believed to be about 12 years old, while others alerted local authorities.
“The whole area was thrown into confusion,” Abayomi said. “People came out after hearing noise from the house. When they got there, they saw that something terrible had happened. The girl was quickly taken to the hospital, and we were later told she was responding to treatment.”
Medical sources in the community confirmed that the child remains under close observation but has shown signs of improvement. Doctors are also monitoring her psychological condition, given the traumatic nature of the incident. Family members and community leaders have reportedly been assisting hospital staff to ensure the child receives adequate care and support.
Speculation has circulated among residents regarding the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Some community members suggested the man may have been experiencing mental or emotional distress prior to the incident, though no official confirmation has been made. Others have cautioned against drawing conclusions until investigations are completed.
A source familiar with the family, who requested anonymity, described the situation as deeply troubling and urged authorities to handle the matter with sensitivity, particularly given the age of the victim.
“What matters most now is the safety and recovery of the child,” the source said. “There are many unanswered questions, and only a proper investigation can establish what truly happened.”
The Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said a comprehensive investigation is underway. The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has ordered detectives to thoroughly examine the case to determine the events leading up to the man’s death and his daughter’s injuries.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed a detailed investigation into the incident,” Abutu said. “Officers are gathering statements, examining the scene, and working with relevant agencies to establish the facts.”
Police sources said the investigation would also look into the man’s background, recent behaviour, and any possible warning signs, as well as whether there had been prior reports of domestic issues involving the family.
Community leaders in Ise-Ekiti have since called for calm and urged residents to avoid spreading rumours or unverified claims. They also emphasised the need for greater awareness around mental health and family support systems, noting that unresolved personal or psychological challenges can sometimes escalate into devastating outcomes.
The incident has renewed conversations in Ekiti State about access to mental health services, child protection mechanisms, and the role of communities in identifying and responding to early signs of distress within households.
As investigations continue, authorities say further updates will be provided when more information becomes available. For now, attention remains focused on the recovery of the injured child and ensuring that justice and clarity are achieved through due process.
