Nigeria: Court Jails Woman for Mobilising Son, Friends to Beat AEDC Worker to Coma During Power Enforcement in Nasarawa

A magistrate court in Nasarawa State has ordered the remand of a woman accused of orchestrating a violent assault on an electricity worker who was carrying out his official duties, an incident that has reignited concerns over the safety of utility staff in Nigeria.

The victim, Abdul Ishaka, a Customer Relations Officer with Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC), was reportedly attacked on February 10, 2026, while on duty in the Karshi area under the Masaka Business Office.

What Happened

According to AEDC, the incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. when Ishaka questioned a customer, Mrs. Laraba Waziri, over the illegal reconnection of electricity after her supply had earlier been disconnected for non-payment.

Company records indicate that the customer’s account had accumulated an outstanding debt of ₦272,499.47.

AEDC alleges that following the confrontation, Mrs. Waziri mobilised her son and several of his friends, who then attacked the staff member, leaving him unconscious.

Rushed to Hospital

Ishaka was initially taken to Emmanuel Baptist Clinic, where he received emergency first aid, before being transferred to the Federal Medical Center, Keffi. He remains on admission and is currently receiving treatment.

Police Step In, Court Orders Remand

In response to the incident, a senior police officer intervened, directing the Nasarawa State Police Command to fast-track investigations.

Mrs. Waziri was arrested, arraigned before the Senior Magistrate Court, Auta Balefi, and subsequently remanded in police custody. The court ordered that she remain in detention while efforts continue to arrest other suspects believed to have participated in the attack and are currently at large.

AEDC Raises Alarm

In a statement released on Thursday, February 12, AEDC condemned the assault, describing it as a troubling reminder of the risks faced by electricity workers enforcing regulations.

The company called for stronger protection for utility personnel and urged members of the public to resolve billing and service disputes through lawful channels rather than violence.
