The governors of Nigeria’s Bayelsa and Enugu States have resigned from the country’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with Peter Mbah, Enugu State Governor already defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while the Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State is also rumored to be planning to join the APC.
Governor Diri announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Also, the Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly and 22 lawmakers, have equally resigned from the PDP, exposing a deep crack within the opposition party.
Governor Mbah resigned from PDP on Tuesday, moving to swiftly join the APC.
Commenting on the rationale behind his defection to the APC, Governor Mbah said “This is no whimsical decision. It’s a collective move by the political family in Enugu State, comprising members of the National Assembly, members of the State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, all the Local Government Chairmen and Councillors, all political appointees, and over 80% of party executives.”
Such resignations and defections are not unusual in Nigerian politics.
