A 17-year-old student, Daniel Johnson, has been remanded at the Juvenile Correctional Centre in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria after allegedly stabbing his friend, Timilehin Ariyo, to death following a dispute over clothing.
The incident reportedly occurred on March 6, 2026, at around 4:00 p.m., along a roadside in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria, during a lesson at a UTME and WAEC preparatory centre.
Court proceedings
Johnson was arraigned by the police on a one-count charge of murder. Police prosecutor Martin Olowofeso told the Family Magistrate’s Court in Akure that the defendant allegedly carried a knife to the confrontation and admitted to stabbing the deceased during the altercation.
The offence is said to contravene Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Laws of Ondo State.
Allegations of prior violent behavior
In court, the deceased’s brother claimed that Johnson had been recently initiated into a deadly occult group and had a history of violent behavior. He alleged that the defendant had previously used a knife to threaten family members and even a JAMB lesson teacher during classes.
The prosecutor requested that Johnson be remanded at the Juvenile Correctional Centre in Akure pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Counsel to the defendant, Mr. O. O. Oladapo, raised no objection to the remand application.
Magistrate Temitope Alphonso granted the request, ordering Johnson’s remand and adjourning the case to June 2, 2026, for further hearing.
