Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), the corporate social responsibility arm of Newmont Ghana’s Ahafo Mine, says it has invested over GH¢66,045,955 in infrastructure projects in 10 beneficiary communities in the Ahafo Region of Ghana.
According to NADeF, the investments into the infrastructural projects were made between 2009 and 2024.
The infrastructure projects encompass various sectors, including health, education, water, and sanitation, aimed at providing better access to essential services that enhance the quality of life and boost resilience to socioeconomic shocks, the Foundation said.
It listed the beneficiary communities as: Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, Wamahinso, Yamfo, Susuanso, Afrisipakrom, Terchire, and Adrobaa.
Infrastructural development stands as a pivotal thematic area for the Foundation, with approximately 25 percent of NADeF’s funds dedicated to these crucial projects.
This allocation aligns seamlessly with the Foundation’s mission to empower communities through grants, knowledge sharing, partnerships, and capacity building to achieve sustainable development.
This information came up during an inspection of eight infrastructural projects across four communities—Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Wamahinso—conducted by members of the Board of Trustees of NADeF. The projects, which span education, health, road networks, and social amenities, are valued at GH¢27.3 million and are at various stages of completion.
At Ntotroso, the inspection team inspected a three-storey boys’ hostel block at the College of Nursing and Midwifery, which was approximately 90 percent complete and expected to be handed over in six months.
At Gyedu, a three-storey classroom block for the Gyedu Technical Institute, was around 70 percent complete. These developments reflect NADeF’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and overall community well-being.
During the visit to Wamahinso, the inspection team evaluated a health centre project that includes children’s, delivery, male and female wards, an outpatient department (OPD), and storerooms, which was 99 percent complete.
All things being equal, the facility is expected to become operational in four months. Additionally, the team inspected the University of Energy and Natural Resources satellite campus at Kenyasi No. 2, where ongoing road upgrades, landscaping, the installation of a lift and audio-visual equipment, and furnishing with furniture are taking place. The construction of a four-unit pavilion lecture block is also progressing steadily.
Professor Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NADeF, commended the contractors working on the projects across the ten host Ahafo communities for their quality workmanship.
According to him, “The quality of work carried out so far by the contractors is a testament to the critical role being played by the Sustainable Development Committees (SDCs) in their oversight responsibilities to ensure value for money.
