Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9, 2025, following days of violent protests over a controversial social media ban.
The government’s move to block platforms including Facebook, X, YouTube, and Reddit sparked a youth-led uprising known as the “Gen Z protests,” and clashes with security forces left at least 19 people dead.
Even after the ban was lifted on September 9, unrest continued, with protesters setting fire to the parliament, officials’ residences, and party offices. Kathmandu airport was closed, a curfew imposed, and helicopters used to evacuate key government officials.
Facing widespread anger and escalating violence, Oli resigned immediately, citing the need for a political and constitutional resolution to the crisis.
