NDC’s Fifi Kwetey: Let Justice Take Its Course, Even If It Reaches the Chief Justice

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has emphasized that justice must be allowed to take its course, even if it reaches the highest levels of the judiciary. Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Kwetey defended the government’s handling of the case involving the Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo’s case, saying that no one should be above the law, not even the one who presides over it.

A Commitment to Accountability

Kwetey stressed that the probe into the Chief Justice’s conduct is not driven by politics but by a deep commitment to accountability. “As far as I’m concerned, if she has done everything okay, there’s no problem,” he noted. “But if there’s a problem and it’s established, then that’s it.” He insisted that the process must be allowed to unfold without interference, trusting the Council of State to do a proper job.

Trust in the Council of State

Kwetey expressed confidence in the Council of State, which includes a former Chief Justice and a former Speaker of Parliament. “I think those are noble people who will not simply go on a witch hunt,” he said. “They will be able to do a proper job.” He also defended President Mahama’s integrity in handling the matter, describing him as a person who is not petty-minded.

A Prima Facie Case Established

The NDC General Secretary noted that a prima facie case has already been established, and the next steps must follow the law. “Clearly, once a case is established against her, she has to go,” he said. “And if the case is shown that she actually has no case to answer, there is no problem.”

Accusations Against the NPP

Kwetey accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of panicking over the situation, suggesting that they fear the Chief Justice’s departure would make it difficult for them to feel safe when cases are brought against them. He rejected any suggestion that the government was using the situation to neutralize judicial opposition, emphasizing that the pursuit of justice must be blind to position or power.

The Message is Clear

For Kwetey, the message is clear: justice must be allowed to take its course, even if it reaches the Chief Justice. “Let justice take its course, even if it reaches the Chief Justice,” he said, emphasizing that the law must be applied, even at the highest levels.

Conclusion

The NDC’s stance on the matter underscores the importance of accountability and the rule of law in Ghanaian governance. As the case unfolds, it is essential to prioritize transparency and fairness, ensuring that justice is served without fear or favor. The outcome of this case will likely have significant implications for the judiciary and the country’s commitment to the rule of law.
