Namibia bans alcohol, gatherings in cemeteries after ‘disgraceful’ event

Windhoek authorities have cautioned residents against holding social events in cemeteries after a weekend gathering at Gammams cemetery drew public outrage.

City of Windhoek officials said the incident featured arranged seating, cooler boxes and alcohol in full view of mourners. A resident who witnessed the scene called it “nothing short of disgraceful,” describing open car boots, people drinking and an atmosphere “more like a shebeen than a place of rest.”

In a statement on Thursday, the city condemned the conduct as “unacceptable,” saying it disrespects the dignity of the deceased and disturbs grieving families. Officials reminded the public that littering or leaving waste at burial sites is a criminal offense and pledged strict monitoring and enforcement to protect cemetery grounds.

“Cemeteries are sacred spaces reserved for burials and remembrance,” the statement said. “Social gatherings, alcohol consumption and littering within cemetery grounds are strictly prohibited.”

Gammams cemetery has faced scrutiny before: in 2021, a man was arrested after video showed shots being fired during a funeral there, and local media reported cars being spun in a nearby parking area.
