The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an urgent alarm over the widespread distribution of counterfeit Kiss condoms in several major markets across Nigeria. In a public alert (No. 042/2025), the agency warned that these substandard products pose severe health risks and fail to provide the protection they promise.
The alert followed a detailed report from DKT International Nigeria, the Marketing Authorisation Holder (MAH) and a leading NGO focused on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention.
Affected Locations Nationwide
According to NAFDAC, the falsified condoms have been detected in several high-volume commercial centers, including:
- Onitsha Market (Anambra State)
- Idumota Market (Lagos State)
- Trade Fair Market (Lagos State)
- Major Markets in: Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, and Enugu.
Severe Health Risks
Kiss condoms are essential medical devices used for family planning and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, gonorrhea, and syphilis. NAFDAC cautioned that the counterfeit versions lack basic quality and safety standards, exposing users to:
- Condom Breakage: High risk of unintended pregnancy and STI transmission.
- Infections and Allergic Reactions: Due to poor-quality materials and untested lubricants.
- False Sense of Security: Encouraging risky behavior under the assumption of protection.
How to Spot the Fakes
NAFDAC highlighted several physical inconsistencies that distinguish the counterfeit products from the genuine Kiss brand:
| Feature | Genuine Kiss Condom | Counterfeit Version |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging | High-quality print, clear designs | Darker wrappers, distorted designs, poor-quality print |
| Labelling | Complete manufacturer address and medical info | Incorrect or missing addresses and device info |
| Material | Standard latex thickness and durability | Thinner latex, poorly constructed material |
| Lubrication | Adequate and consistent | Reduced or poor-quality lubrication |
| Design | Standard teat end | Noticeably smaller teat end |
Regulatory Action and Reporting
NAFDAC has instructed its zonal and state offices to begin monitoring, surveillance, and “mop-up” exercises to remove these dangerous products from circulation.
Advice to the Public: Distributors, healthcare providers, and consumers are urged to source medical products only from authorized and licensed suppliers.
How to Report:
- Suspicious Products: Contact the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or email sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
- Adverse Reactions: Report side effects via the Med-safety app (available on Android/iOS) or email pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.
NAFDAC confirmed that this notice has been uploaded to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Surveillance and Monitoring System to alert international partners.
