Two children, aged 8 and 10, were tragically killed and 17 people injured when a gunman opened fire on people attending Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. The shooting occurred during a service celebrating the first week of school, with many students and families in attendance.
Of the 17 injured, 14 are children, and seven of those shot are in critical condition. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the act as “deliberate violence against innocent children and other people worshipping,” and called the shooter’s actions “absolutely incomprehensible.”
Authorities identified the gunman as a 20-year-old male with no significant criminal history, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect used three firearms—a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol—firing through the church windows. While no shell casings were found inside the building, smoke bombs were discovered.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed the horror of the event, stating that there were “no words that can capture the horror.” President Donald Trump was briefed on the “tragic shooting” and said the White House would continue to monitor the situation. Area hospitals reported receiving numerous patients, primarily children, with ages ranging from six to 14.
