Manchester United’s iconic Old Trafford stadium has been plagued by a mice infestation, leaving the club’s management scrambling to address the issue. The problem came to light after a recent inspection by hygiene authorities, who discovered droppings in several areas of the stadium, including corporate suites and a food kiosk
As a result, the club’s food hygiene rating has been slashed from four stars to two, a significant blow to the team’s reputation. The inspectors’ findings also highlighted the presence of mice in areas where food is prepared and served, posing a potential health risk to fans and staff.
The infestation is believed to be linked to the stadium’s location between a canal and a railway line, which provides a conduit for rodents to enter the premises. The problem is exacerbated by the colder winter temperatures, which drive the mice to seek shelter in warmer areas .
Manchester United officials are working closely with pest control experts and local authorities to tackle the issue. Pest controllers are now visiting the stadium up to five times a week to monitor the situation and implement measures to prevent further infestations.
This is not the first time Old Trafford has faced hygiene issues. In the past, the club has been hit with a one-star rating after serving uncooked chicken at a corporate event. The current infestation has sparked concerns about the overall maintenance and upkeep of the stadium, which has not undergone any major renovations since 2006 .
The club’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has assembled a task force to explore options for the stadium’s future, including the possibility of building a new stadium. While the mice infestation is an immediate concern, it also raises questions about the long-term viability of Old Trafford as a premier sports venue.
