Widespread unrest has erupted across Mexico after the reported killing of Mexican drug lord, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho,” the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
According to the Mexican Army, Oseguera and several senior members of his organization were killed during a coordinated military operation carried out on Sunday, February 22, in the state of Jalisco. The mission, aimed at capturing the high-profile cartel leader, was swiftly followed by violent reprisals in various parts of the country.
Soon after news of El Mencho’s death emerged, armed groups responded with coordinated attacks.
Vehicles were torched, highways were obstructed with flaming barricades, and gun battles broke out between cartel members and security forces in at least six states, including Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, and Nayarit.
Key cities were hit particularly hard. In Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, streets became impassable as burning vehicles blocked major routes, and authorities advised residents to remain indoors amid escalating violence.
Images and videos shared online showed thick columns of smoke rising above Puerto Vallarta, heightening anxiety among both residents and visitors.
The unrest also disrupted air travel. Scenes of panic unfolded at Guadalajara International Airport, where travelers were seen scrambling for safety following reports of nearby gunfire and cartel-related activity. Several airlines—including Air Canada, United Airlines, Aeroméxico, and American Airlines—temporarily halted flights to and from Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara as a precautionary measure.
