A man has died after suffering a medical emergency inside Durham’s indoor Market Hall,UK on Saturday afternoon, prompting shock and distress among shoppers and staff.
Emergency services were called to the city centre venue at around 12.55pm, after the man collapsed inside the market. It is understood he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Staff and members of the public acted quickly, beginning CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive. Despite their efforts, the man could not be revived.

North East Ambulance Service confirmed it sent a significant response to the scene, including:
Two paramedic ambulances
A critical care paramedic
A clinical team leader
A doctor in a rapid response vehicle
The incident occurred near Back Silver Street, close to the Market Place area.
Statement from Market Hall Management
Managers of Durham Market Hall confirmed the death in a statement shared on social media, expressing condolences to the man’s family and friends.
“Today, we experienced a very sad incident in our Market Hall.
A gentleman sadly collapsed, and despite the best efforts of everyone involved, he could not be revived.”
The statement also praised the response of staff and customers, highlighting the compassion shown during the emergency.
“Customers worked alongside the Durham Markets team, taking turns to perform CPR while waiting for emergency services, while others helped provide dignity and privacy during an extremely distressing situation.”
Market management added that although not everyone who helped could be identified, their actions would not be forgotten.
News of the incident prompted an outpouring of sympathy from members of the public, many of whom praised those who stepped in to help.
One person wrote:
“This was a very sad situation. Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends. Respect to everyone who tried to help.”
Another said:
“So sad. Thoughts are with his loved ones.”
No further details about the man have been released. Authorities have not indicated any suspicious circumstances.
Market Hall management said the response from both staff and shoppers reflected “the very best of the community” during an extremely difficult moment.
