Man City star John Stones Considered Retirement Amid Injury Woes

Manchester City and England defender John Stones revealed he contemplated retiring from football last season (2024/2025) as he struggled with repeated injury setbacks.

The 31-year-old center-back spent much of the campaign sidelined by foot and hamstring issues, limiting him to just 24 appearances for club and country before his season ended prematurely in February.

Stones described the intense mental frustration of the situation, telling BBC Radio 5 Live that he thought about “stopping” because he was exhausted by being “ultra professional” and still breaking down without having answers.

The Decision to Keep Fighting

Despite his emotional struggles, Stones confirmed that his deep-seated competitive spirit kept him in the game. He stated that he couldn’t walk away due to the “fight in me” and the “winning mentality” that has defined his career since childhood.

Stones has enjoyed immense success at Manchester City, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two League Cups, and the Champions League.

Support from Thomas Tuchel

Stones also highlighted the support he received from England boss Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel gave Stones a non-playing role in the squad at the end of last season, a gesture of faith that allowed him to continue training with the team. Stones called this a “special moment,” affirming his dedication to playing for England.

Now fit, Stones is eligible to make his first appearance under Tuchel in the upcoming friendly against Wales or the World Cup qualifier in Latvia.
