A Constituency Returning Officer for the Nkhoma Constituency Tally Centre in Lilongwe is currently in police custody following a failed suicide attempt, according to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, made the announcement during a press briefing at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

She confirmed that the commission has since appointed a new Returning Officer to oversee and complete the electoral process in the affected constituency.

Justice Mtalimanja also disclosed that, as of now, sixteen out of the country’s thirty-six local councils have physically submitted their election results to the national tally centre in Lilongwe.

The press briefing addressed the ongoing receipt of election results and complaints lodged with the commission following Tuesday’s general elections.
