Mahama Vows to End ‘Dumsor’ Crisis: ‘We Will Keep Your Lights On’

At the National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana on January 9, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama made a passionate commitment to resolving Ghana’s energy crisis and preventing a return of “dumsor,” the frequent power outages that have plagued the nation in the past.

Addressing the gathering, President Mahama acknowledged the challenges facing the energy sector, including insufficient fuel supplies for power generation. However, he assured Ghanaians of his administration’s determination to tackle the issue head-on.

“There is a threat of power outages, but my brothers and sisters, don’t despair. You elected us to solve the problems, not to put the blame on anybody else,” the President stated, emphasizing his government’s resolve to take responsibility and find solutions.

To avert potential power disruptions, the President revealed he had convened a stakeholders’ meeting on January 8 to develop innovative strategies for stabilizing the energy supply. “We will make sure that your lights stay on and that we do not have dumsor,” he pledged.

The specter of “dumsor” loomed large during Mahama’s first administration, drawing criticism from businesses and households. This time, the President is determined to lead a collaborative effort to stabilize energy production and restore public confidence.

“Challenges in the energy sector require urgent and collaborative efforts. We are fully prepared to ensure that this country moves forward, lights on and all,” he concluded.

As Ghana navigates this critical period, the President’s renewed commitment has rekindled hope for lasting solutions to the country’s energy challenges.
