Mahama Meets Injured Ghanaian Traders After Deadly Burkina Faso Terror Attack

President John Dramani Mahama has paid a personal visit to Ghanaian survivors of a brutal terrorist attack in Burkina Faso, offering comfort and state support as they recover from their injuries.

The President was at the 37 Military Hospital on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, where the injured traders are receiving treatment after being evacuated to Accra. They were part of a group of Ghanaian tomato traders travelling by truck when armed attackers ambushed them in Burkina Faso.

According to preliminary accounts from survivors, the assailants stopped the truck, forced the men to line up, killed several of them, and later set the vehicle on fire. The attack claimed the lives of seven Ghanaians, all of whom have since been buried.

President Mahama, who had earlier attended an official engagement in Takoradi, went straight to the hospital upon arriving in Accra to get a first-hand briefing on the incident and the condition of the survivors. He was accompanied by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.

During the visit, the President spoke privately with the injured traders, expressed his condolences to the affected families, and assured the survivors that the government would take full responsibility for their medical expenses. He also emphasized the importance of psychological support as they recover from the trauma.

The survivors were airlifted back to Ghana by the Ghana Armed Forces and are currently undergoing medical treatment and trauma counselling. Authorities say security agencies are continuing to gather information on the attack as regional concerns over cross-border terrorism persist in parts of Burkina Faso.

Government officials say further support will be extended to the victims and the families of those who lost their lives as investigations and diplomatic engagements continue.
