Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has held discussions with João Cravinho, the European Union Special Representative for the Sahel.

During the meeting, Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to engaging proactively with the Alliance of Sahel States — Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger — and emphasised the importance of a unified regional platform.

He said a revitalised Accra Initiative would be essential in efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism in the sub-region.

The Ghanaian leader noted that Ghana’s development progress provides a solid base for resilience but added that the country continues to require capacity building in key sectors.

The President also welcomed the EU’s continued support for enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. He said both sides have agreed to expedite the EU-Ghana Security and Defence Partnership.
