President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana has urged for increased US support in addressing the pressing security concerns in the West African subregion. This call to action was made during bilateral talks with General Michael E. Langley, Commander of the US African Command (USAFRICOM), on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
Mahama emphasized the need for bolstered security cooperation and logistical support for the Ghana Armed Forces to effectively counter evolving threats in the region. He expressed Ghana’s commitment to enhancing its security posture and appreciation for US support, while also highlighting the importance of expanding collaborative efforts.
The West African subregion is currently grappling with multiple security threats, including terrorism, extremism, and conflicts that have resulted in instability. To address these challenges, Mahama and Langley discussed key topics such as establishing a bilateral agreement for joint maritime patrols to safeguard Ghana’s coastal waters and combat illegal fishing and piracy.
Furthermore, Mahama explored opportunities for increased foreign investment in Ghana, stressing the importance of creating a stable environment conducive to business and economic growth. The Munich Security Conference, where these talks took place, serves as a platform for global leaders to engage in dialogue on international security.
This development comes as Ghana faces growing security concerns, including the threat of terrorism and extremism. The country has been working to enhance its military capabilities, including the establishment of a War College to train future military strategists and leaders.
