Madagascar’s highest court on Tuesday appointed Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the army commander who led a recent military mutiny, to serve as the country’s interim president after the ouster of President Andry Rajoelina.
In a statement posted on its official website, the court said it made the decision because President Rajoelina was “unable to perform his duties” and had fled the country following widespread defections within the military amid weeks of youth-led protests.
The court instructed Colonel Randrianirina to oversee the organization of new national elections within 60 days.
Randrianirina had declared on national radio earlier this week that the military had taken control of the government after lawmakers impeached Rajoelina. The move came amid mounting demonstrations demanding the president’s resignation and deepening political instability in the island nation.
