A newly surfaced audio recording of former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser has cast doubt on Algeria’s long-standing assertions that it provided military support to Egypt during the 1967 Six-Day War.
The recording, aired by Saudi television network Al Arabiya, dates back to September 1970—just 22 days before Nasser’s death—and captures a conversation between the Egyptian leader and Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah.
In the discussion, Nasser dismisses Algeria’s claims, saying: “The Algerians did not help us by a single thousandth, by a single pound,” contradicting decades of Algerian narratives about its role in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
The broadcast also included remarks by Egypt’s then–Vice President Anwar Sadat, who reportedly told an Algerian student that “in reality, there was no help,” clarifying that the aircraft Algeria claimed to have sent to Egypt were, in fact, supplied by the Soviet Union.
The leaked recording has reignited debate across the Arab world, challenging Algeria’s self-portrayal as a pillar of Arab solidarity during one of the Middle East’s most defining conflicts.
