Lagos Taskforce Arrests Seven For Open Defecation

Seven individuals have been detained in Lagos following a targeted operation against open defecation in parts of Lagos Island, state authorities have confirmed.

The enforcement action was carried out in the early hours of February 27 by the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce’s anti–open defecation squad. According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in Lagos State, the arrests took place in Ebute Ero, Sura–Simpson, and surrounding areas.

Wahab identified those arrested as Shile Suraj, Chika Chibuzor, Ganiu Mustafa, Justice Ugo, Ajala Olanrewaju, Adam Abubakar, and Lawal Mohammed.

Enforcement and Next Steps

The Commissioner said the suspects would be transferred to the headquarters of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) in Oshodi for further investigation and possible prosecution under the state’s environmental sanitation laws.

Lagos authorities have intensified enforcement in recent months as part of broader efforts to curb open defecation, improve public hygiene, and reduce health risks linked to poor sanitation. Officials say such practices contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases and environmental pollution, particularly in densely populated communities.

Public Health Concerns

Urban sanitation remains a pressing challenge in parts of Lagos Island, where limited access to public toilet facilities and overcrowding complicate compliance. However, the state government maintains that enforcement is necessary to protect public health and uphold environmental standards.

Residents in affected areas have previously called for increased provision of accessible and affordable sanitation facilities alongside enforcement measures.

The latest arrests underscore the state’s continued push to address sanitation violations while reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on environmental offences.
