Kenyan Afro-Pop Star Njerae Joins Africa Now Radio to Discuss Her Music, Influences, and Future Plans

(February 20, 2025) – This week’s episode of Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madida features an exclusive conversation with Kenyan Afro-pop sensation Njerae. She joins the show via FaceTime to discuss her latest single, “Decide,” her EP Four Letter Word, her biggest musical influences, and how her background in psychology shapes her artistry.

The episode airs Friday, February 21st, at 9 AM London / 10 AM Lagos/Paris / 11 AM Johannesburg / 1 AM LA / 4 AM NYC on Apple Music 1, with additional broadcasts on YFM Accra (Sundays at 2 PM), YFM Kumasi (Saturdays at 3 PM), and YFM Takoradi (Saturdays at 6 PM).

Njerae’s Musical Journey and Inspirations

Njerae credits R&B artist Tori Kelly and Kenyan supergroup Sauti Sol as major influences in her musical journey. She explains that while she initially gravitated towards singer-songwriter and alternative/indie styles, she felt the need to embrace her Kenyan identity in her music.

“Growing up, I was mostly influenced by R&B music. I used to listen to a lot of Tori Kelly, but at the same time, Sauti Sol was coming up. They had a huge influence on my journey as well. I knew that just by being Kenyan, I had to find that Kenyanness in me.”

Njerae recalls that at the time, Kenyan mainstream music was heavily dominated by gengetone, rhumba, and older traditional sounds, with no artist blending them with her style. She sought to bridge that gap, drawing inspiration from local pioneers like Sauti Sol while exploring different genres.

Her Dream Collaboration: Bien from Sauti Sol

When asked about her dream collaboration, Njerae spoke highly of Bien, a core member of Sauti Sol. She admires his impact on the Kenyan music industry, saying:

“Bien is a huge motivation and pillar of strength for many Kenyans. He’s doing something that most of us thought would be impossible. It’s great to live at a time where we can interact with artists like him without barriers. I’ve met him a couple of times, and yeah, hopefully, that song is going to come soon.”

How Sauti Academy Helped Shape Her Career

Njerae also credits Sauti Academy, the renowned Kenyan music school, for giving her the foundational tools to navigate the industry. After high school, she realized that Kenya lacked structured music education outside of university-level programs. Attending Sauti Academy helped her refine her songwriting skills, build industry connections, and define her career goals.

“You can say you want to be a singer, but at the end of the day, what specifically is it that you’re trying to achieve? Sauti Academy helped me shape my career, improve my songwriting, and even taught me how to network and carry myself as an artist.”

Studying Psychology and Its Influence on Her Music

Beyond music, Njerae has a background in psychology, which she says significantly influences her songwriting and approach to creativity. Initially drawn to music therapy, she later became fascinated by human interaction, which now plays a role in her lyrics and storytelling.

“When I started songwriting, I was very introverted, and music was my outlet. I realized that it could help others, too. I still have the dream of pursuing music therapy in the future because I believe it can help a lot of people.”

Managing the Surprise Success of “Aki Sioni”

Njerae’s song “Aki Sioni” has seen a resurgence in popularity, despite being released three years ago. She attributes this delayed success to the unpredictability of the music industry but sees it as a sign of growth.

“If there’s no growth, then I’m doing nothing. So these surprises prepare me for bigger stages. Sauti Academy taught me always to be prepared, even in unexpected moments. So when ‘Aki Sioni’ blew up, I was just like, ‘Ah, well, it’s about time.’”

Why Njerae Loves Taking Risks in Music

Njerae also shared that she intentionally pushes herself beyond her comfort zone to grow as an artist. She cited her 2024 EP ‘Out With The Old’ as an example of this mindset, as it forced her to overcome her fear of collaborating with other artists.

“I don’t like being in a comfortable space. I like to challenge myself because I believe change is necessary for growth. Out With The Old was a completely collaborative project, and it was meant to push me beyond my fears.”

Upcoming Performances and Tours

Njerae has several upcoming shows in Nairobi, encouraging fans to stay updated on her social media for dates and locations. She also expressed her desire to expand her performances outside Kenya, hinting at potential shows in South Africa.

“For anyone trying to find me, check out my socials. You’ll definitely see me on a stage somewhere, and you won’t regret it! I’m hoping to tour outside Kenya soon, and hopefully, South Africa is next.”
