In a significant move toward public accountability, Kanye West—now legally known as Ye—has taken out a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal. The letter, titled “To Those I’ve Hurt,” serves as a formal apology for his recent antisemitic behavior and inflammatory actions, which he attributes to a long-undiagnosed medical condition.
The Source of the Conflict: A 2002 Medical Oversight
West traced the origin of his recent struggles back to his 2002 car accident, which famously inspired his debut single “Through the Wire.” While the immediate physical trauma was treated, West claims a deeper frontal-lobe injury went unnoticed until 2023. He explained that this medical oversight led to his Bipolar-1 diagnosis in 2016 and subsequent mental health damage.
“Disconnected Moments”: Explaining Recent Actions
The artist addressed several highly controversial events from early 2025, including:
- The Swastika T-shirts: West explained that during manic episodes, he “lost touch with reality” and gravitated toward the most destructive symbols.
- The “Heil Hitler” Track: He acknowledged the May 2025 release of the song, which was banned in Germany but went viral online.
- Recent Viral Clips: He referenced footage of rightwing influencers making Nazi salutes to his music.
- Holocaust Denial: He admitted to engaging in Holocaust-denial during these “disconnected moments.”
West described his experience with Bipolar-1 as an “out-of-body experience” characterized by paranoia, poor judgment, and impulsive behavior that nearly “destroyed” his life.
Apologies to the Black Community and Family
Beyond his apology to the Jewish community, West expressed regret for his impact on the Black community, specifically referencing past comments about slavery, the “White Lives Matter” slogan, and his use of the Confederate flag. “I am so sorry to have let you down. I love us,” he wrote.
He also confessed to treating his loved ones “the worst,” specifically mentioning the humiliation and exhaustion endured by his family, including his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, and their eldest daughter, North West.
The Path to Recovery
West credited his wife, Bianca Censori, for encouraging him to seek help after he hit “rock bottom.” He detailed his current commitment to:
- Medical Treatment: Following a regimen of medication and therapy.
- Lifestyle Changes: Focusing on “clean living,” exercise, and finding community in Reddit forums with others sharing similar mental health experiences.
- Artistic Focus: Channeling his energy into his delayed album, Bully, which has seen its release date pushed back several times.
A Plea for Patience
Closing his letter, West clarified that while his diagnosis does not excuse his actions, he is asking for “patience and understanding” as he seeks forgiveness and focuses on meaningful change.
