On July 15, 2025, the University of the Witwatersrand bestowed an Honorary Doctorate in Commerce upon Kaizer Motaung, founder and owner of Kaizer Chiefs, in recognition of his transformative contributions to South African football, youth empowerment, and social cohesion. This marks Motaung’s second honorary doctorate, following a Doctorate in Social Sciences from the University of Cape Town in 2022.
During the Wits Great Hall graduation ceremony, Motaung addressed the Class of 2025, urging them to be pioneers and use their skills for societal good. “Be pioneers in your own right, pushing boundaries and breaking down barriers. Use your talents and skills to make a positive impact on our society,” he said, invoking Nelson Mandela’s belief that “education is the most powerful tool which you can use to change the world.” He encouraged graduates to engage in initiatives promoting sports development, education, and economic empowerment to build a brighter future for South Africa.
Motaung, affectionately known as “Chincha Guluva,” emphasized that the honor reflects not just his personal journey but the broader impact of football. “This honour is not just about me. It is a tribute to the beautiful game of football that has given me so much,” he stated, crediting Kaizer Chiefs’ loyal supporters for the club’s success.
Reflecting on his deep ties with Wits, Motaung noted a connection forged during the apartheid era through football, stating, “My love for Wits runs deep,” highlighting relationships that transcended sport during a time of division. The recognition celebrates Motaung’s legacy as a unifying figure in South African football and society.
