Joan Laporta Resigns as FC Barcelona President to Seek Re-election

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the football world, Joan Laporta has officially stepped down as the President of FC Barcelona. The resignation, confirmed on February 9, 2026, marks the beginning of a high-stakes transition period for the Catalan giants.

A Procedural Move for Re-election

Contrary to initial speculation regarding internal turmoil or external legal pressures, the club has clarified that Laporta’s resignation is a tactical and procedural necessity. Under FC Barcelona’s official statutes, any sitting president who intends to contest a fresh mandate must resign from their post before formally launching an electoral campaign.

Laporta, who has led the club since March 2021, has chosen to trigger this clause to run in the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for March 2026. Alongside the president, several key members of the board have also vacated their positions to participate in the campaign or facilitate the neutral electoral process.

Acting Leadership: Rafa Yuste Takes Charge

To ensure the club remains stable during the campaign cycle, Vice-President Rafa Yuste has assumed the role of acting president.

  • Continuity: Yuste will oversee day-to-day operations and essential sporting decisions.
  • Reduced Board: A management commission will remain in place to handle administrative affairs, ensuring that the team’s pursuit of domestic and European honors is not disrupted by the off-field political activity.

The Laporta Tenure: A Legacy of Contrast

Laporta’s second term at the helm (2021–2026) has been defined by a mix of significant challenges and notable successes:

  • Financial Restructuring: The president became famous for using “financial levers” (palancas) to stabilize the club’s debt while keeping the team competitive.
  • Camp Nou Redevelopment: His administration oversaw the ambitious and ongoing “Espai Barça” project, which includes the massive renovation of the Spotify Camp Nou.
  • On-Field Renewal: Under his watch, the club achieved domestic La Liga success and integrated a new generation of talent from La Masia, though European glory remained elusive.

The Road to March 2026

Laporta’s decision to seek another term suggests a strong belief in his long-term vision for the club. By stepping down now, he officially opens the floor for other candidates to challenge his leadership. The upcoming vote among the club’s members (socios) will decide whether Laporta is given the mandate to complete the financial and structural rebuilding he began five years ago.
