Italian authorities have launched an investigation into a 56-year-old man accused of concealing his mother’s death for three years while continuing to collect her pension, according to reports from Corriere della Sera.
Officials say the man, whose identity has not been released, allegedly kept the death of his mother, 82-year-old Graziella Dall’Oglio, secret and hid her body inside their home in the northern Italian municipality of Borgo Virgilio. Investigators believe he never notified authorities of her passing and instead continued living in the family property while accessing her pension funds.
Local media report that the man went to great lengths to impersonate his late mother, including reportedly visiting a government office dressed in her clothing in order to renew her identity card after her death. Authorities estimate he obtained the equivalent of roughly $61,000 per year by maintaining access to her pension and managing several family properties.
The case drew national attention after a public employee became suspicious of the impersonation, noting physical characteristics inconsistent with an elderly woman. Following the report, investigators reviewed identification photos and discovered clear discrepancies. This eventually led to a search of the man’s home, where they located Dall’Oglio’s remains.
Authorities have not suggested foul play, and early indications point to natural causes, though a formal autopsy is still pending. “It is an extremely unusual and deeply sad situation,” Borgo Virgilio mayor Francesco Aporti told local reporters.
The man is currently under investigation for concealing a body and committing pension fraud. Officials have not confirmed whether he has been formally taken into custody, as the case remains active.
