The Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Chittagong (Chattogram), Bangladesh, has officially suspended its operations effective Sunday, December 21, 2025. The decision comes in response to a deteriorating security situation at the Assistant High Commission of India (AHCI) in the city.
According to a statement posted on the official IVAC website, services will remain unavailable until a comprehensive review of the situation is completed.
“Due to the recent security incident at AHCI Chattogram, Indian visa operations at IVAC Chattogram will remain suspended until further notice,” the statement read.
Protests and Injuries in Khulshi Area
The suspension follows intense overnight protests near the Assistant High Commission in the Khulshi area. The demonstrations were sparked by the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, drawing large crowds of students and local residents to the mission on Friday.
The situation escalated as law enforcement moved to disperse the crowd:
- Casualties: At least four people, including one police officer, sustained injuries during the confrontation.
- Police Action: Authorities used force to clear the area outside the mission after protesters gathered to demand justice for Hadi.
Security Beefed Up
In response to the unrest, the Bangladesh Police have significantly increased security presence in front of the Assistant High Commission to prevent further escalations.
Local authorities and the Indian diplomatic mission are expected to conduct an assessment of the environment before any announcement regarding the resumption of visa services is made. Travelers and applicants are advised to monitor the official IVAC portal for updates.
