GUWAHATI: The family of music icon Zubeen Garg has lodged a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), demanding a thorough probe into his death under mysterious circumstances while swimming in Singapore on September 19.
The complaint—signed by Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia, his sister Palme Borthakur, and his uncle Manoj Kumar Borthakur—was emailed to the CID on Saturday. Manoj Borthakur said the family had specifically named Siddharth Sharma, the singer’s manager, and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organiser of the 4th Northeast India Festival in Singapore, as accused, urging investigators to bring everyone present with Garg that day under scrutiny. The family has also sought protection of the copyrights to his creative works.
On Sunday, a nine-member Special Investigation Team assisting the CID visited Garg’s Guwahati residence to record family statements. Meanwhile, the Assam government has directed Mahanta to surrender by October 6, while also freezing all his bank accounts. Separately, Assam Police have launched a probe into his alleged links to organised financial crimes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast, paid tribute to the late singer, calling him “a shining gem of Assam’s cultural heritage” who would forever live in people’s hearts. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed the sentiment, describing Garg as “Assam’s crown jewel” whose cultural contributions would always be cherished.
