A doctor at the Government Taluk Hospital in Thamarassery, Kozhikode, Kerala, is in critical condition after being attacked by the father of a young girl who died earlier this year from amoebic meningoencephalitis.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, when K.V. Sunoop, the father of eight-year-old Anaya, assaulted Dr. Vipin, accusing him of negligence that led to his daughter’s death.
Anaya was initially admitted to the Thamarassery Taluk Hospital with symptoms of fever but her condition worsened. She died on August 14 while being transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. Her family later alleged that she had not received adequate treatment at the taluk hospital.
Two of Anaya’s siblings were also infected with amoebic meningoencephalitis but have since recovered.
According to eyewitnesses, Dr. Vipin was speaking with colleagues and a patient on Wednesday afternoon when Mr. Sunoop suddenly attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon, striking him on the head. Witnesses said the attacker shouted accusations against the doctor before being overpowered by hospital staff and bystanders, who managed to disarm him.
Police officers arrived at the scene and took Mr. Sunoop into custody.
Dr. Vipin was given emergency treatment at the Taluk Hospital before being transferred to a private hospital in Kozhikode city, where he remains in critical condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the assault, which has sparked renewed calls for better security measures in hospitals across Kerala.
