The Delhi government has outlined a comprehensive action plan following the Supreme Court’s decision to reserve its order on lifting the ban on bursting green firecrackers in the capital.
According to senior officials, the government has issued directions to implement a range of anti-pollution measures and ensure strict monitoring of firecracker use, in line with the court’s final ruling.
Planned Measures by the Delhi Government
If the Supreme Court allows the use of green firecrackers, the government will activate several protocols, including:
• Setting up a dedicated control room to handle complaints of violations during the festive season.
• Deploying enforcement teams comprising personnel from the Delhi Police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to curb the sale and use of non-compliant, high-emission firecrackers.
• Allowing citizens to report violations through online platforms such as the Sameer App, Green Delhi App, and other official complaint channels.
• Launching awareness campaigns to educate residents on permissible types of green firecrackers and safe usage practices.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that the government is fully prepared to act in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directives.
“If the ban on bursting firecrackers is lifted, we will immediately convene a meeting to take the necessary steps in light of the court’s order,” Sirsa said.
Earlier, the Supreme Court indicated that a five-day relaxation on the firecracker ban may be permitted, noting that a complete prohibition in Delhi-NCR is “neither practical nor ideal” due to frequent violations. The court emphasized the need for a balanced approach.
Ahead of Diwali, the Delhi government informed the court via affidavit that it had already drawn up several strategies to monitor and regulate the sale and use of traditional firecrackers. Sirsa had also earlier proposed allowing limited bursting of crackers—for one hour each in the morning and evening—on Diwali and Gurupurab.
