Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, has tragically passed away 18 days after he and his brother were allegedly subjected to racial slurs and a violent assault by a group of five men in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
The victim succumbed to his injuries on the morning of Friday, December 26, 2025, at Graphic Era Hospital, where he had been in critical condition since the attack on December 9.
Details of the Assault
According to the police complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Michael Chakma, the incident occurred between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on December 9 in the Selaqui area. The brothers, originally from the Unakoti district in Tripura, had gone out to purchase items when they were confronted by five men who appeared intoxicated.
The attackers reportedly began hurling casteist and racist slurs at the brothers. When the students objected to the verbal abuse, the situation turned violent:
- The Weaponry: The accused allegedly used a knife and a heavy metal bangle (kada).
- The Injuries: Michael was struck on the head with the kada. When Anjel intervened to protect his brother, the assailants stabbed him in the abdomen and head.
The complaint further alleged that the suspects threatened to kill the brothers if the matter was reported to the authorities, leaving the siblings in fear for their lives.
Arrests and Upgraded Charges
The five accused—identified as Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khwas, Sumit, and Ayush Badoni—were arrested on December 14 following a five-day investigation.
While they were initially booked for attempted murder, senior sub-inspector Jitender Kumar confirmed that following Anjel’s death on Friday, the charges have been upgraded to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). During interrogation, the accused admitted to the dispute, claiming it began during an argument at a liquor shop.
Community Impact
The death of Anjel Chakma, who was pursuing his MBA at a private university, has sparked outrage and concern regarding the safety of students from Northeast India living in the capital. The accused remain in judicial custody as the legal proceedings move forward under the more severe murder charge.
