Helen Zille to Get Roasted: Political Powerhouse Joins 2025 Comedy Hot Seat at Laugh Africa Festival

Showmax has revealed that Helen Zille, chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance (DA), will be the next bold figure to face the flames in the highly anticipated 2025 Roast during the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival.

Zille, known for her razor-sharp wit and unapologetic opinions, is ready to take the heat with trademark bravado. “People do it behind my back, so why not let them do it to my face?” she quipped, embracing the spirit of comedy, controversy, and entertainment the Roast promises.

“Selecting the right roastee is a science,” said Stuart Taylor, creative director of the festival. “It’s a fine line between a cock-up and a laugh-up – and no one walks that line quite like Helen Zille.”

Following Minnie Dlamini’s fiery roast in 2024, Showmax is raising the stakes. “Helen Zille is bold, outspoken and exactly the kind of personality that makes for an unforgettable Roast,” said Tracy-Ann Van Rooyen, Executive Head of Content Strategy at Showmax.

The 2025 Laugh Africa Comedy Festival boasts an all-star lineup, including international headliner Deon Cole from “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish.” Comedy heavyweights like Felix Hlophe, Celeste Ntuli, and Trevor Gumbi, along with comics from across Africa and the U.S., will take over the Sandton Convention Centre from May 2 to 4, promising a weekend of unfiltered, laugh-out-loud entertainment.

Zille summed it up best: “If people are going to laugh, I’d rather join them – showing Africa I can take it just as well as I dish it out.”
