Gyakie Unveils Soul-Stirring Single “Sankofa” Ahead of Debut Album After Midnight

Ghanaian Afro-fusion sensation Gyakie — born Jackline Acheampong — has returned with a profound new single, “Sankofa”, marking her first release of 2025 and setting the tone for her highly anticipated debut album, After Midnight, slated for later this year.

Best known for her breakout hit “Forever” and her acclaimed My Diary EP featuring Davido, Gyakie continues to shape her signature sound — a seamless blend of Afro-fusion, R&B, and highlife. “Sankofa,” co-written with frequent collaborator Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra), draws on the meaning of the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Sankofa — “to return and retrieve what’s lost.” It’s a message of healing, reflection, and emotional honesty.

The stripped-back production allows Gyakie’s rich, evocative vocals to shine, as she narrates a journey through solitude, loss, and late-night introspection. According to the artist, “Sankofa” was inspired by her own late-night moments of grief, solitude, and her mother’s ritual of midnight prayer — a motif that underpins the mood of the entire album.
