Guinea-Bissau Candidate Fernando Dias Claims Early Win as Nation Awaits Official Election Results

Opposition figure Fernando Dias announced an early victory in Guinea-Bissau’s presidential election on Monday, asserting that he secured an outright majority even before the national electoral commission released provisional results. Dias said he received over 50% of ballots cast, a margin he claims would eliminate the need for a runoff.

Dias’ declaration comes at a delicate moment for the West African nation, which has faced decades of political instability and multiple military coups. Sunday’s vote marked the first presidential election in which the influential African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC)—the historic movement behind the country’s liberation from Portugal—was excluded from direct participation. However, PAIGC publicly endorsed Dias, boosting his campaign and reshaping the political landscape.

“We have secured victory in the first round. The people have spoken,” Dias told supporters at his headquarters in Bissau. The 47-year-old candidate, representing the Party for Social Renewal, said citizens were eager for a change in leadership after years of political tension. His candidacy gained additional momentum when he received the backing of PAIGC leader and former prime minister Domingos Simões Pereira, who was runner-up in the contested 2019 election.

Incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, 53, is seeking to break a historic pattern by becoming the first Guinean president in nearly 30 years to win re-election. Analysts had anticipated a close race between Embaló and Dias, reflecting deep divisions within the electorate.

According to the national electoral commission, voter turnout surpassed 65%, underscoring strong public engagement despite concerns over security and the exclusion of major political figures. Provisional results are scheduled for release on Thursday, spokesperson Idrissa Diallo said.

Neither the electoral authorities nor President Embaló’s office has responded to Dias’ early victory announcement. Observers warn that premature claims could heighten tensions in a country where disputed election outcomes have previously led to political crises.
