Canadian musician Grimes, known for their hit song Genesis and using they/them pronouns, publicly criticized social media platforms, including their ex-partner Elon Musk’s platform X, calling them “poison” and a “prison” in a post on July 8, 2025.
The 37-year-old artist, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, wrote on X: “Ok I’ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is overwhelmingly, abundantly and profoundly clear that this place — and all of these places — are a poison — a prison of utterly short form deep deep-sounding nonsense attached to no one that ur brain will discard imaging its learning.”
Grimes added, “The entire thing is a theatre. A s-tty pale simulacra of a life,” expressing strong disapproval of the superficial nature of online platforms.
