The Swedish Football Association (RFEF) announced on Monday that former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been appointed the new national team coach, replacing Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was sacked last week following three consecutive defeats in World Cup qualifying.
Potter, 50, who was most recently sacked by Premier League club West Ham in September, will be tasked with immediately turning around the team’s fortunes. Sweden currently sits bottom of Group B despite having star strikers like Alexander Isak (Liverpool) and Viktor Gyokeres (Arsenal) in their squad.

The Mandate and Contract Details
The appointment comes at a crucial time, with the RFEF setting a clear objective: “The goal is to create the optimal conditions to reach the World Cup in the summer of 2026.”
The contract covers the crucial ongoing qualifying period, which includes upcoming games against Switzerland and Slovenia in November, as well as a potential playoff round in March. The agreement automatically extends through the 2026 World Cup finals in the US, Canada, and Mexico, should Sweden qualify.
Potter expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating:
“I am very humble facing this assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver week after week in the world’s best leagues.”
A Return to Swedish Roots
Potter is familiar with the Swedish football environment, having managed Ostersunds FK between 2011 and 2018. During his tenure there, he famously guided the club up to Sweden’s top division.
Since leaving Sweden, he has managed Swansea City, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Chelsea, where he was sacked in April 2023 after the team’s form declined. This was followed by a difficult nine-month stint at West Ham.
Despite Sweden’s struggles to score in their last three matches, the hope is that Potter can quickly integrate their high-value strikers and revive their World Cup campaign.
