Ghana’s Ruling Party NDC Accused of Gender Bias in District Chief Executive Selection

Ms. Doris Acharibia

A petition addressed to the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has brought to light allegations of gender bias in the selection process for the District Chief Executive (DCE) position in the Kassena-Nankana West District of Ghana.

The petition, signed by Mr. Moses Abana Abiiro, protests the exclusion of Ms. Doris Acharibia, the only female aspirant among twelve contestants, from the final list of three nominees ¹.

Ms. Acharibia, a dedicated party member since 1994 and Branch Communications Officer at the Achorbiisi Electoral Area, presented herself for vetting on January 24, 2025, in Bolgatanga. Her exclusion from the final selection has raised concerns about the party’s commitment to affirmative action and gender balance.

The petition highlights four key reasons why Ms. Acharibia’s exclusion is unjust:

– *Promotion of Gender Inclusion*: Ms. Acharibia’s inclusion would have served as a beacon of hope for women and young ladies aspiring to participate in politics and governance.
– *Breaking Stereotypes*: The decision to exclude her reinforces the notion that women do not go far in politics.
– *Proven Commitment and Experience*: With 29 years of experience working with women and the girl child, Ms. Acharibia possesses the requisite skills and leadership capabilities to contribute significantly to the district’s development.
– *Strengthening the NDC’s Impact*: Her leadership would have bolstered the party’s influence at the grassroots level by promoting policies and initiatives that enhance the socio-economic development of women, men, youth, and children in the Kassena-Nankana West District.

The petition calls on the National Vetting Committee and the leadership of the NDC to reconsider Ms. Acharibia’s candidacy and give her a fair hearing. The outcome of this petition will be closely watched, as it has significant implications for gender equality and inclusive governance in Ghana.
