The Parliament of Ghana has summoned two of the country’s top ministers to appear before it next week to respond to concerns over the lack of life jackets in communities that rely largely on water transport.

The summoning of the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor comes in the wake of the drowning of seven students from the Lawra Senior High School.

As earlier reported, the seven students died on June 13, 2025 after their canoe capsized on the Black Volta River.

On Tuesday, June 17, during a parliamentary session, Ghana’s Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, agreed with a proposal by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor for Mr. Mubarak and Mr. Jinapor to appear before the House, describing the life jackets and students situation as critical and in need of urgent action.

According to Mr. Amoako, “If we can look at the budget of the Interior Ministry so that a certain portion of their budget will be allocated to take care of this emergency. It is very critical.”

Appeal

On his part, the Member of Parliament for Lawra, Bede Ziedeng, appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Lawra Municipal Assembly to urgently supply life jackets to communities along the Black Volta.

He said “I appeal to NADMO, the Regional Coordinating Council and the Lawra Municipal Assembly to come to the aide of Lawra SHS and the bereaved families,”.

He pledged to personally donate 10 life jackets to the affected communities and urged Parliament to take immediate legislative action to prevent further tragedies.
