The main opposition party of Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will be staging a demonstration on September 23, 2025 in protest against what it called state-sponsored arrest of its executives by the Ghana Police Service.
Salam Mustapha, the Youth Organizer of the NPP, made the announcement in a Facebook post on September 12, 2025.
The announcement about the planned protest comes on the back of the arrest and remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, by an Accra Circuit Court.
Abronye was ordered to remain in police custody for two weeks to allow prosecutors enough time to conduct investigations.
He was arrested on Monday, September 8, 2025 over what police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.” He has since remained in custody.
Salam Mustapha said on Facebook: “Tuesday, 23rd September, the National Youth Wing will organise a demo against the state-sponsored police harassment. From Obra Spot to police headquarters. 6 a.m. sharp!”
Prior to the arrest of Abronye, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was arrested and detained by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) of Ghana over allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. Other party affiliates have also reportedly been arrested on different dates over separate cases.
The leadership of the youth wing says the upcoming protest is expected to draw large numbers of NPP supporters, insisting it will resist what it perceives as politically motivated actions by state institutions.
