The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources of Ghana has strongly refuted reports suggesting that the government canceled a $1.2 billion bauxite lease awarded to Rocksure International.
In a statement released by its Public Relations Unit and shared with Africa Publicity, the Ministry described the reports as “false, baseless, and misleading,” expressing concern over their circulation in some sections of the media
. The reports alleged that the government had terminated the lease and was seeking partnerships with foreign companies to develop the country’s bauxite resources.
To clarify the situation, the Ministry provided the following key points:
No Valid Lease Existed:
The Ministry stated that no valid lease had ever been granted to Rocksure International. Therefore, no cancellation could have occurred. The alleged lease, along with others, was not ratified by the 8th Parliament of Ghana before its dissolution on January 6, 2025. As per a 2019 Supreme Court ruling, any lease not ratified by Parliament is considered legally void.
Unsubstantiated $1.2 billion Valuation Claims:
The Ministry also dismissed the reported $1.2 billion valuation of the bauxite lease, noting that no official valuation has been conducted to support such a figure. It described the amount as unsubstantiated and misleading.
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to transparency in the management of Ghana’s natural resources and urged the public to disregard the misleading reports.
