Ghana’s Kantamanto Traders Get Breathing Room: 2-Day Grace Period Before Relocation

The Ghanaian Korle Klottey Municipal Chief Executive (MCE),Alfred Gaisie, has granted Kantamanto traders a temporary reprieve, allowing them to operate on the streets for two more days before relocation measures are enforced. This decision acknowledges the market’s significance as a key commercial hub in Accra.

Why the Grace Period?

According to the MCE, the two-day grace period is designed to give traders sufficient time to adjust to the new arrangements. The municipal authorities are working to accommodate those who lack space, ensuring a smoother transition. “This initiative is for the greater good, and we aim to keep Accra clean, improve vehicular movement, and ensure pedestrian safety,” Gaisie emphasized.

Traders’ Concerns

This isn’t the first time Kantamanto traders have faced relocation challenges. In 2020, traders rejected a government offer to temporarily relocate to a car park, citing concerns about losing their spots at the market. A devastating fire in January 2025 also left thousands of traders displaced, with many rebuilding their stalls and livelihoods.

Government’s Plan

The government has assured traders that provision is being made to accommodate those affected by the relocation. The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly aims to work with traders to ensure a successful relocation process. “We urge everyone to support the exercise for the best possible outcome,” Gaisie appealed.
