Ghana’s IGP Visits Bawku To Help Restore Peace After Violent Clashes

Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has embarked on a working visit to Bawku, a town in the Upper East Region of Ghana, to assess the current security situation in the town and foster cooperation between the Police and the local youth.

 

The visit comes on the heels of a violent clash between the police and local youth, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

 

Key Engagements

Visiting Injured Victims: The IGP and his team met with individuals who sustained gunshot injuries during the recent violence, expressing regret and assuring them of the Police’s commitment to lasting peace in Bawku.

– Courtesy Call on Overlord: The IGP paid a visit to the esteemed Overlord of Bawku, Zugraan Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, seeking support in resolving the impasse between the youth and the Police.

– Interacting with Police Personnel: The IGP engaged with police officers and other security agencies, emphasizing the need for neutrality and adherence to their mandate.

Assessing Damage: The team visited Pusiga, Kusasa, and Garu to assess property damage and interact with officers and community members.

 

Collective Effort Towards Peace

The IGP’s visit has been welcomed by the Minority in Parliament as a positive step towards restoring peace. To stabilize the area and prevent further violence, the Police Service has launched joint patrols with the Ghana Armed Forces in Bawku and its surrounding communities.

– Restore Peace: Ensure peace and security in Bawku and surrounding communities.

– Improve Relations: Foster cooperation and good relations between the Police and the local youth.

– Address Underlying Issues: Work with stakeholders to address the root causes of the violence and find a lasting solution.

 

This development is in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to restoring peace in Bawku, which he emphasized during his visit to the area. The President assured the people of Bawku that his administration would prioritize their security and stability.
