Ghanaian Speaker Bagbin Tells MPs: Uphold Discipline, Civility in Parliament

 

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged Ghanaian Members of Parliament (MPs)  to approach their duties with principle, reason, and civility as the House resumes sitting. He emphasized the importance of engaging in debates firmly but respectfully and resolving differences through reasoning, not violence.

Adhering to Rules and Regulations

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Speaker Bagbin stressed the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations governing parliamentary proceedings. He warned that any Member of Parliament who engages in misconduct during sessions will face consequences, emphasizing that the work of the House is too crucial to be derailed by behavior that does not serve the public interest.

Stricter Enforcement of Standing Orders

Speaker Bagbin announced that both he and the Deputy Speakers will enforce the standing orders more strictly and will not tolerate disorder or absenteeism. He emphasized that it is time for Parliament to raise its standards, not through words alone, but through discipline, active participation, preparation, and respect for procedure.
