Ghanaian Opposition Official Wontumi on Hunger Strike In Detention

Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire constituency in Ghana, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has stated that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of Ghana’s main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has refused to eat in protest against his detention at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

According to Dompreh, Wontumi has embarked on a hunger strike, sparking concerns about his health and well-being.

Protest at EOCO Office

The claim comes on the heels of a protest staged by the Minority caucus and NPP supporters at the EOCO office on Thursday, demanding a review of the bail conditions and Wontumi’s immediate release. The protesters described the GH₵50 million bail sum as excessive and unfair, insisting that they would remain at the EOCO headquarters until Wontumi was released.

Shock and Criticism

Speaking to JoyNews, Dompreh expressed shock at the bail conditions imposed on Wontumi and criticized EOCO officials for allegedly denying legal counsel access to him. “Considering the bail conditions and the conduct of the EOCO officials—especially their refusal to grant us access—it is shocking,” he said. Dompreh described the situation as a deliberate strategy to persecute Wontumi, alleging that the treatment contravenes principles of justice and fairness.

Medical Attention

Despite the lack of official communication, Dompreh confirmed that Wontumi has been taken to the NIB Clinic for medical attention. This development has raised concerns about Wontumi’s health, given his alleged hunger strike.

NPP’s Reaction

The NPP has been vocal in its criticism of Wontumi’s detention and the bail conditions. The party has described the treatment of Wontumi as unfair and has demanded his immediate release. The situation continues to generate debate, with many calling for a fair and just resolution.

EOCO’s Response

EOCO has not officially commented on the allegations of denying legal counsel access to Wontumi or the claims of Wontumi’s hunger strike. However, the office is expected to provide clarification on the matter soon.

Implications

The situation has significant implications for the NPP and the country’s justice system. The party’s reaction and the public’s response will be closely watched, as the nation waits to see how this saga unfolds.
