Ghanaian Nurses and Midwives to Embark on Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana has announced a nationwide strike set to begin on June 2, 2025, in response to the Ghanaian government’s failure to pay outstanding allowances to its members.

The Association claims that its members are owed 12 months of unpaid stipends, a situation that it says has become unbearable for its members.

Unresolved Issue

Despite issuing a 14-working-day ultimatum to the government, the Association has received no response to their demands. President of the Association, Ebenezer Boateng, expressed deep frustration over the government’s continued inaction and confirmed that the strike will proceed as planned if the issue remains unresolved.

Frustration and Desperation

“We do not want to hear any story from them,” Boateng stated. “This has been a consistent problem for about 5 years now, all they give is an assurance, we don’t need that now.” The Association has been left with no alternative but to withdraw its services until definitive measures are taken to address the prolonged payment delays.

Impact on Healthcare

The nationwide strike is expected to have a significant impact on the healthcare sector, with nurses and midwives playing a crucial role in the delivery of healthcare services. The strike will likely affect hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country, causing disruptions to patient care.

Government’s Response

The government has yet to respond to the Association’s demands, and it remains to be seen whether they will take any action to address the issue before the strike begins. The Association has made it clear that it will not back down until its demands are met.
