Authorities in Ghana have arrested more than 500 people over the past five months for allegedly engaging in illegal gold mining, the government of Ghana has announced.
The arrests form part of the President John Dramani Mahama administration’s efforts to fight illegal mining.
According to the government, it is also undertaking a major land reclamation exercise targeting 10,000 hectares of degraded land.
Authorities say the crackdown on illegal mining aims at halting the destruction caused to the environment and water bodies through illegal mining activities.
Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources says one of the biggest setbacks for Ghana in previous enforcement efforts has been the inability to secure convictions of persons arrested for illegal mining activities.
Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, says “From 2022 to 2024, out of 845 arrests we made, we couldn’t even prosecute. Only 35 were prosecuted, and that is 4%, and that is really the challenge we had to face.”
