Ghana: Trade Minister Commends GRA for Launching Sustained Tax Education and Modified Taxation Scheme

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has applauded the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for launching two key initiatives the Sustained Tax Education Programme and the Modified Taxation Scheme to boost public understanding of tax obligations and encourage voluntary compliance, particularly within the informal sector.

Speaking at the launch ceremony held at the Moving Pic Hotel in Accra on Wednesday 5 November, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare described the initiatives as a “significant milestone” in Ghana’s efforts to promote inclusive economic development.

She emphasized that tax education is vital for mobilizing domestic revenue to fund national priorities such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and industrial growth.

The Minister reaffirmed her Ministry’s commitment to partnering with GRA to extend tax sensitization across all sectors, noting that “a well-informed taxpayer is a willing and compliant taxpayer.” She also praised GRA’s ongoing digitalization drive for simplifying tax processes and improving accessibility for businesses and entrepreneurs.

Other speakers, including GUTA representative Mr. Julius Atiga, commended the initiative as timely and urged continuous engagement with traders. Ms. Abena Ofori, a small-scale entrepreneur, expressed optimism that the scheme would help traders understand their tax obligations and avoid penalties.

GRA Commissioner-General Mr. Anthony Kwasi Sarpong reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to making tax administration more inclusive and transparent.

Hon. Ofosu-Adjare concluded by urging Ghanaians to view taxation as a shared national responsibility, calling it “a civic duty and a strategic investment in Ghana’s future.”

The twin initiatives are expected to enhance compliance, expand the tax net, and strengthen Ghana’s domestic revenue mobilization efforts.
