President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that efforts are being made to replace Ghana’s current TV licence with what he termed as public media levy.
He made this known in Accra on Thursday, January 8, 2026 when he visited the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
The visit to GBC forms part of Mr. Mahama’s engagements with government institutions.
He said Cabinet discussions were ongoing regarding the replacement of the TV license with the public media levy.
According to him, the public media levy is designed to strengthen funding for public broadcasters in Ghana.
President Mahama noted that “There are a few suggestions we have with regard to the so-called TV licence. And I think that our thinking is going in the same direction to amend that law to make it a public media levy of some sort.”
