Ghana To Construct 50,000 Capacity Stadium As Part of New Sports City Project

Ghana is planning to construct a 50,000 seating capacity stadium as part of its new sports city initiative.

The stadium will be built at the Borteyman Sports Complex in the Greater Accra Region, according to Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams.

Adams was speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show hosted by Accra-based CitiFM on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

In the interview monitored by Africa Publicity, the Sports Minister says

“We are looking to have a new stadium of that size around our Borteyman Sports Complex. Because we want to elevate that whole space into a sports city or village so that international clubs can come and camp and train there.”

He added “With such a facility, we will also add accommodation. When this is done, in the future, you will not see accommodation for the Black Stars on the national budget. But we are working on a PPP arrangement.”

According to him, the completion of the stadium is scheduled before 2028.

He stated that the government is targeting a minimum of 50,000 seats for the new stadium, with completion scheduled before 2028, adding that

“We want to do a minimum of 50,000 in the Borteyman space, and we should be able to finish it before 2028.”

Meanwhile, he indicated that Ghana’s sports sector was facing a number of infrastructural challenges.

But he expressed the President John Mahama government’s commitment to rehabilating various sports facilities in the country.
